AM Designer of the Month for this April is Mary Katrantzou, a young and very talented london based designer, originate from Athens, Greece. Attended Rhode Island School of Design before completed both her BA and MA at Central Saint Martins.
Her design signatures are a hyperrealist aesthetic, bold graphics and industrial jewellery. She has previously worked for Sophia Kokosalaki, a well-known Greek fashion designer with her own label based in London.
As Best Graduate award winner at the London Fashion Awards from her previous Spring 2009 offerings, she has proven her ingenuity for her debut Fall 2009 runway collection, inspired by Vintage perfume bottles, 18th century portraits and Victor Skrebneski, who's famous for his fashion photography and his work for the ad campaigns of the cosmetics company Estee Lauder, Inc. Victor has also photographed various celebrities, among them are Cindy Crawford, Oprah Winfrey, Audrey Hepburn, Hubert de Givenchy and François Truffaut.
“Then I got bored with it, and that was that.”, the designer said as sharing story about her perfume collection she had when she was growing up.
Now all those bottles have becoming the core inspiration that has become the basic idea behind the textile print for her recent collection.
“Some are iconic bottles, like Shalimar, that I’ve tweaked, and some are vintage bottles I’ve played around with. And some bottles I’ve only imagined,” she explained at her studio.

She received New Generation exhibition sponsorship to showcase her Spring 2009 collection during London Fashion Week.
All was started last year, when Mary Katrantzou opened the Central Saint Martin's Fall 2008 Show with a collection that featured trompe l'oeil digital prints of oversized jewellery on bonded jersey dresses inspired by Constructivism and early '70s references. The samples were later sold to Bill Blass.
